Your 2020 Tool Stack Probably Isn't Good Enough
When remote work hit in March 2020, most teams grabbed whatever video call software they could find and called it a day. Zoom and Slack became the entire remote toolkit for millions of workers. And for survival mode, that was fine.
But hybrid work in 2021 has different requirements. You need tools that work equally well for in-office and remote participants. You need async capabilities so not everything requires a meeting. And you need analytics to understand how work patterns shift as people move between locations.
We've tested dozens of tools across our own team and with Teambridg customers. Here are the eight we believe are essential for hybrid teams this year.
Communication and Collaboration
1. Loom (Async Video) — If you haven't tried async video messaging yet, you're missing out. Loom lets you record your screen and camera simultaneously, creating quick video explanations that replace meetings. Perfect for code reviews, design walkthroughs, and status updates. The free tier is generous enough for most small teams. Cost: Free for 25 videos, $8/user/month for Business.
2. Notion (Documentation Hub) — Every hybrid team needs a single source of truth for documents, wikis, and project notes. Notion is the best balance of flexibility and usability we've found. It replaces Google Docs, Confluence, and basic project boards in one tool. The key is to actually use it — document decisions, meeting notes, and processes. Cost: Free for personal, $8/member/month for Team.
3. Miro (Virtual Whiteboard) — For brainstorming and visual collaboration, Miro is the closest thing to a physical whiteboard. The infinite canvas works for everything from sticky note exercises to system architecture diagrams. Crucially, it works asynchronously — people can add to boards at different times. Cost: Free for 3 boards, $8/member/month for Team.
Project Management and Focus
4. Linear (Project Management) — For engineering and product teams, Linear has quickly become our favorite project tracker. It's fast (seriously, the UI speed is remarkable), opinionated about workflow, and keyboard-driven. For non-engineering teams, Asana remains excellent. Cost: Free for small teams, $8/user/month for Standard.
5. Clockwise (Calendar Optimization) — Clockwise is an AI calendar assistant that automatically rearranges your meetings to create larger blocks of focus time. In a hybrid environment where meetings can pile up, having a tool that actively protects your deep work time is invaluable. It also helps teams find overlapping availability for collaborative time. Cost: Free for basic, $6.75/user/month for Teams.
6. Krisp (Noise Cancellation) — If you're in a home office with kids, dogs, construction, or roommates, Krisp is a lifesaver. It uses AI to remove background noise from your microphone in real time, working with any video call app. We've been using it for a year and it's one of those tools you can't live without once you've tried it. Cost: Free for 60 min/day, $5/month for Pro.
Analytics and Wellbeing
7. Teambridg (Productivity Analytics) — Yes, we're including ourselves, and here's why: hybrid teams have a unique visibility challenge. When some people are in the office and others aren't, it's easy for remote workers to become invisible and for workload imbalances to go unnoticed. Teambridg provides the analytics layer that makes work visible regardless of location. Focus time tracking, collaboration patterns, wellbeing indicators, and our new wellbeing dashboard give managers and employees the data they need without invasive monitoring. Cost: Free for small teams, $6/user/month for Pro.
8. Donut (Virtual Coffee) — Hybrid work can erode the casual social connections that happen naturally in offices. Donut is a Slack integration that randomly pairs team members for virtual coffee chats. It's simple, lightweight, and surprisingly effective at maintaining cross-team connections. Several Teambridg customers credit Donut with keeping their culture intact during the remote transition. Cost: Free for basic, $49/month for Premium.
Remember: tools are enablers, not solutions. The best tool stack in the world won't help if your team doesn't have clear communication norms, documented processes, and a culture of trust. Start with the practices (we recommend our async communication guide as a foundation), then choose tools that support them.
Teambridg is free for teams up to 3 users. No credit card required.
