Building an Ethical AI Monitoring Policy
If your organization is deploying AI-powered monitoring (or evaluating tools), you need a written ethical AI monitoring policy. Here's a template:
- Purpose statement: Why are we using AI monitoring? (Acceptable: employee wellbeing, workload balancing, collaboration improvement. Unacceptable: maximizing output, identifying underperformers for termination.)
- Data inventory: What data does the AI access? What data is explicitly excluded?
- Transparency commitment: How will employees be informed about AI monitoring? How can they see their own AI-generated insights?
- Human oversight protocol: What decisions require human review? Who reviews AI-generated insights before they're acted upon?
- Bias audit schedule: How often are AI models audited for bias? Who conducts the audit?
- Employee rights: What recourse do employees have if they disagree with an AI-generated assessment?
- Review cycle: How often is this policy reviewed and updated?
This isn't optional bureaucracy — it's the governance infrastructure that makes AI monitoring sustainable. Without it, you're one bad headline away from a trust crisis that no technology can fix.
