Compliance at Enterprise Scale

Layer 2: Implementation Layer. Business-unit-specific configurations that adapt the policy to local contexts: jurisdictional requirements, role-specific monitoring needs, industry regulations. A financial services team in Germany has different requirements than a marketing team in Texas.
Layer 3: Audit Layer. Ongoing verification that implementations match policies. Quarterly reviews, automated compliance checks, incident response procedures, and regular bias audits for AI models.
Policy should be centralized. Implementation should be distributed. Audit should be independent. This structure balances consistency with flexibility while maintaining accountability.
AI-Specific Governance Requirements
AI-powered monitoring introduces governance requirements that traditional monitoring did not have:
Algorithmic Impact Assessment: Before deploying any AI monitoring feature, conduct a formal assessment of potential impacts on employees. Who might be disadvantaged? What biases might the model contain? What happens when predictions are wrong?
Model Documentation: Maintain documentation of every AI model used in monitoring: what data it was trained on, what it predicts, what accuracy it achieves, and what limitations it has. This is a regulatory requirement under the EU AI Act and good practice everywhere.
Continuous Monitoring of Models: AI models drift over time. A model that was fair at deployment may develop biases as data patterns change. Implement automated drift detection and scheduled bias audits.
Human Oversight Mechanisms: Document how human judgment is integrated into every AI-informed decision. As our ethical framework requires, no AI prediction should trigger automatic consequences.
Building Your Framework
For enterprises starting their governance journey:
- Appoint an AI Monitoring Governance Lead. This person owns the framework and reports to both the CHRO and the legal/compliance function.
